The Universe As Consciousness

What if the fundamental particles of the universe were incredibly minute units of consciousness that coalesce to form the energetic templates for leptons and quarks (the subatomic particles we know). What would this mean for what we are and how we relate to the fabric of reality, the structure of our cosmos? Regardless of the validity, might this be a valuable perspective? Have these great physicists before glimpsed that we may be more intrinsically connected to the structure of our universe and each other than our separate macroscopic forms would lead us to believe?
